K-C Raceway Results April 18, 2009 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE All-Star K-C Opener huge success
Briggs doubles in ASLMS weekend
By Scott Wolfe
CHILLICOTHE, OHIO-Great weather and a fast track greeted the first appearance-ever for the newly formed O'Reilly All-Star Circuit of Champions Late Models Saturday night April 18 during the exciting season opener at Schrader's K-C Raceway. Nearly 100 cars and a great opening night crowd poured into the pits for this inaugural running of the "Rubbin-Repair K-C Spring 50". Bear Lake, PA driver Rick "Boom" Briggs made it a clean sweep of the O'Reilly All-Star Late Model weekend by defeating Steve Casebolt, Jr. by less than two car lengths in a fast, exciting 50-lap sedan-fest. Briggs also claimed another $5,000 payday the previous night at Lernerville Speedway.
Adam Colley blitzed to the win in the ultra competitive Advanced Services Modified feature, while Rob Smith claimed his first-ever K-C victory in the K-C Hobby Stock Division.
At 6:30 owner/promoter Jeff Schrader was feeling the pressure of a ‘light’ crowd, but by the time 7:30 rolled around Schrader was all smiles. “I admit I was a little worried,” said Schrader, “But the night couldn’t have turned out any better. We all got to see some great racing. I’d like to thank the fans, the drivers, and the All-Stars, who worked so hard with our crew to make this a success. I also have to thank the Man upstairs for the great weather. This will give us something solid to build on.”
In an impromptu twist to the always-competitive bid for the ASLMS pole, K-C Raceway owner Jeff Schrader and the All-Stars combined for a $600 to win dash that determined the night's feature starting line-up. The six-hundred appeared to be more like 6,000 the way the eight hot-shoes diced it up for the top spot. Ben Adkins ended up making the pass for the win over Boom Briggs who earlier made a bonsai pass over fast-timer Steve Shaver. Shaver spun on lap four, went to the tail and charged back to third. Adkins went on to claim the win and earn the pole for the big 50-lap special.
Honorary starter for the 50-lap A-main was veteran and former school teacher Danny Schrader, uncle of owner Jeff Schrader. Cars from seven states competed in the event.
Boom Briggs got the initial jump over pole-sitter and 2008 K-C Raceway champion Ben Adkins of West Portsmouth, Ohio. Parkersburg, WV driver Steve Shaver and Davey Johnson of Latrobe, PA also slipped past Adkins as Briggs began to stretch it out over second place Shaver.
Door-to-door racing headlined the action back in the pack as some of the nation's best drivers thrilled the crowd with precision slide jobs, and kamikaze passes. By lap seven, the blistering Boom Boom launched his mount into heavy traffic. The backmarkers were saved by the bell when Wayne Chinn made contact with another car and looped it in turn one to bring out the race's first caution.
The Delaware style restart made the drop of the green a little more trying and bunched up the pack for even closer, wilder racing throughout the pack. Briggs resumed his march with Shaver, and an up-and-coming Steve Casebolt, Jr. who came onto the scene after blitzing the trio of Johnson, Jared Hawkins and Adkins on the start.
On lap 11 the caution came back out for a slowing Rod Conley. Conley re-fired his machine, but after making a warm-up lap pulled into the work area and never returned. This time Casebolt launched his mount past Shaver and tried Briggs on the inside rail. Charging like a freight-train, Boom engineered the Bear Lake express like a precision oiler.
After eight-laps of an aggressive horn-locking battle-- a battle that saw Casebolt momentarily lead on several occasions-- Briggs shook free to gain the top spot by a half-length. Meanwhile, Grayson, KY driver Josh McGuire was picking his way through the field in a march to the front, and Eddie Carrier, Jr. fought with Wayne Chinn and Jared Hawkins in a deadlock for sixth. With shoe-horn in hand, Carrier finally squeezed through a quickly closing hole to take the sixth position.
On lap 19 Dave Hess, Jr. was whistled for a caution. This time the field lined up single file, but the racing was no-less spectacular. Bart Hartman gained momentum in a move over Johnson for fourth, while Briggs and Casebolt resumed their battle for number one. Briggs briefly gained some breathing room through the halfway mark, but again lapped traffic came into play. Casebolt dived low, but Briggs locked down the next groove up each time coming out of the turns just a nose ahead.
One could have thrown a blanket over the first four as Hartman bagged Shaver for third on lap 31 and three laps later the Zanesville, OH driver bagged Casebolt for second. The fourth caution of the night saved Briggs; at least for the moment. Jared Miley was the culprit for the caution and he exited pitside on lap 36.
This time Briggs was in a league-of-his-own, powering up to the next level with a boost of carbon-based adrenaline. Casebolt rode low in second, while Hartman rifled along the high side in a two-car race for second. Chinn's mount lost power on the low side of two with 42 circuits down, while simultaneously Ben Adkins' hopes; and hopes of a K-C local taking the cash went down the tubes.
Did Casebolt have anything left for Briggs? The young charger made a last-bid dive on the restart, but Briggs' Rocket/Custom/ American Racer/Chevy Impala stayed straight and fast on the K-C Highbanks. Veteran Delmas Conley, laying claim to over 700 career wins, moved into fifth over Carrier on lap 45. Still Carrier was the Hard Charger of the race in a 15th to 6th run. Conley went on to swipe away fourth from Shaver on the final circuit and at this point may have been the fastest car on the track.
Briggs rolled on for the win despite losing power on the final circuit and nursing his car to victory lane.
"I had a good friend die this week," said a bittersweet Briggs in the "Rubbin-Repair" victory lane. "I'm pretty sure he was with me the last two nights. With about few laps to go I felt the car sputter. I think I lost a couple valve springs so I moved up a groove and just kept up my momentum."
"It seemed to work. Steve (Casebolt) showed me his nose a couple times, but moving up really helped me keep up my speed. Then when I let off going into turn three the engine blew on the last lap. That's why I had to coast this thing down to victory lane. But it's been a great weekend and a great way to kick-off this 2009 O'Reilly All-Star campaign."
Behind winner Boom Briggs were Steve Casebolt, Bart Hartman, Delmas Conley, Steve Shaver, Eddie Carrier, Jr., Jared Hawkins, Davey Johnson, and Duane Chamberlain.
The Advanced Service Modified main was none-the-less exciting, but the dominator Robbie Kitchen blitzed the field for what looked to be a rather easy win. Then without explanation, Adam Colley blasted by on the 18th circuit to post the win, and a lap later Kitchen went to the infield apron and out of the race. Earlier, great action took place back in the pack, especially the spirited battle between Colley and Rob Stambaugh. For 17 of the 20 laps, this pair sliced and diced to the tune of a crowd-pleasing performance. Colley's next stage was the winning pass of the hard-charging Kitchen.
Just two cautions slowed the event. Despite numerous fights for position, the open wheel drivers were able to hold on without losing the handle. Steven Duty anchored down forth in withstanding several challenges from Jess Hartman. When Kitchen went down the duo moved up a spot into third and fourth respectively at the finish. Doug Betts continued his drive up the ladder with yet another good run, outdistancing two tough competitors in Adam Jordan and Jeremy Rayburn.
Rounding out the top ten behind winner Adam Colley were Rob Stambaugh, Rick Hensley, Steven Duty, Jess Hartman, Doug Betts, Adam Jordan, Jeremy Rayburn, Sean Schobelock, and Bob Crace, Jr.
K-C Hobby Stocks are the guts-n-glory division of local grass roots racing. Planting a velvet seed of Vinton County bluegrass was point-man Rob Smith, who overtook a hard charging Jamey Adams on lap four to post his first-ever K-C feature win. Smith fended off Adams and Joe Williams, who set his sights on the first place target only to come up just a little short at the finish. Behind third place Williams were Tommy Mossbarger, Jamie Dailey, Richard Trego, Shane Newman, Steve Karr, Warren Ison, and William Bapst.
K-C Raceway is located 12 miles South of Chillicothe, OH, three miles out Blain Highway of SR 23 at Alma. The next racing event is May 1 and May 2. K-C is idle the week of April 25. During the late 80's and very early 90's, Late Model stars such as Charlie Swartz and Donnie Moran made a name for themselves touring the area. At the completion of 1993, after crowning Billy Moyer champion, the series dissolved. Fifteen seasons have now passed and Guy Webb has brought back the same excitement and passion that many Late Model fans remember from yester-year.

O'Reilly All-Stars Add K-C to Schedule
K-C Raceway Added to O'Reilly All Star Late Model Series Schedule.
Camargo, IL (March 13, 2009) - Jason Shank – O'Reilly All Star Late Model Series Director As the O'Reilly All Star Late Model Series inaugural event at Lernerville Speedway (Friday, April 17, 2009) draws near, series officials have announced that K-C Raceway, located just outside of Chillicothe, OH, will host four ASLMS events during the 2009 season. Jeff Schrader, K-C Raceway’s brand new owner, just finalized the purchase of the famed southern Ohio high-banked oval as of 1 P.M., this afternoon. “This is a dream come true for me.” Said Schrader in a news release sent out by K-C Raceway Public Relations Director Scott Wolfe. “It is an exciting day for me and my family. A lot people share in the excitement and hopes I have for this season and many more to come at K-C Raceway. I can't wait to get started." The first ASLMS trip to 'Ohio's Fastest 3/8 Mile Dirt Track' will be a $5,000 to win event and will be added on to the series’ inaugural weekend, Saturday, April 18 with the second date, also a $5,000 to win event, coming on Saturday, May 23 and will precede the $7,000 to win 'Grizzly' at Central PA Speedway. The third $5,000 to win event will be held on Saturday, September 19 while the fourth and final ASLMS event will be one to remember as it has been dubbed the "1st Annual Dirt Track World Cup Late Model Classic" presented by K-C Raceway and will be held October 1, 2, and 3. More details on the "Classic" will be available shortly. Each event will be full ASLMS Championship Points Events. "We're extremely excited to be going to KC Raceway," Series President Guy Webb stated, "Adding a facility like KC Raceway to our schedule is just a piece of the overall component in what we are trying to build here however, with the ASLMS being the only series with a $5,000 to win, $1,000 for tenth, and $400 to start purse, a national sponsor, and a lucrative points fund that includes a tow package for our top ten drivers, we were unable to fully come to terms with Potomac Speedway and Natural Bridge Speedway and we have regretfully removed both events from our schedule." "Going from Lernerville Speedway to KC Raceway makes for a fantastic inaugural weekend for the ASLMS," Series Director Jason Shank exclaimed, "both facilities are fast, wide, and action packed. K-C in front of the 'Grizzly' at Central PA Speedway in May adds luster to that weekend and the September date will serve as a bit of a test session for the "Classic" at the beginning of October. I'm sure drivers and fans alike will be thrilled with what we have in store for the "Classic". A reminder to all drivers that are planning on or thinking about competing with the ASLMS full time in 2009, please visit the series website and download the Driver Information and Membership Forms located in the 'Team Menu' section of the webpage, complete them and send to: All Star Circuit of Champions, Inc. 215 W. K-C Announces New Owners Also Announces 2009 Racing Schedule
By Scott Wolfe
CHILLICOTHE, OHIO-As Yogi Berra once said—“It isn’t over till it’s over.” Friday, March 13 it became official and the speculation is indeed over. The historic K-C Raceway near Chillicothe, Ohio has a new owner as longtime, successful businessman Jeff Schrader and wife Vickie officially took over the deed to the speedway after a successful six year tenure from the Jim Nier family. Great plans are in store for K-C Raceway this upcoming 2009 racing season with even bigger plans in the works for 2010.
Friday’s announcement ended a winter of speculation and rumors that K-C Raceway would not run in 2009. The wheels of progress turn slowly. Although plans for the purchase have been ongoing, it was hoped that an earlier announcement could be made. For those who are patient, however, it appears the long wait will be worthwhile as a promising 18-day race schedule for 2009 has been announced along with the changing of the guard.
Schrader said, “Officially at 1 p.m. Friday I became the proud new owner of K-C Raceway. This is a dream come true for me. It is an exciting day for me and my family. A lot people share in the excitement and hopes I have for this season and many more to come at K-C Raceway. I can’t wait to get started.”
Former owner Jim Nier said, “I’ve made a lot of new friends over the past six years while operating K-C Raceway. We made a lot of improvements and think we left the place a lot better off than when we found it. I’d like to thank all the many fans, friends, drivers, owners, and sponsors who supported us over the years and wish Jeff and Vickie the best of luck in their new endeavors.”
Schrader isn’t wasting any time. Nearly twenty race dates are on the card including appearances from the O’Reilly All Star Circuit of Champion Sprint Cars, the World of Outlaw Sprint cars, and World of Outlaw Late Models. A big season-ending Late Model extravaganza is being planned for October 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. The event has been dubbed the K-C Raceway Presents “1st Annual Dirt Track World Cup Late Models Classic”.
The Late Model winner will receive $20,000 to win $1500 to start, while the E-Mod race pays $3000 to win, $200 start . The consy race for Late Models pays $3000 to win and says Schreader, “We may even add a sprint car race on Friday!” Details for this race will be announced as information becomes available.
Weekly racing will continue at K-C Raceway for the most part on Saturday nights with a schedule of 410 Outlaw Sprints, Late Models, Hobby Stocks, and E-Mods making up the regular weekly show as announced. “The Night the Stars Come Out” will again be a headlining event for the O’Reilly All Star Circuit of Champion Sprint Cars plus Late Models and E-Mods on July 3.
