K-C Raceway World of Outlaw Results July 26, 2008
By Scott Wolfe
CHILLICOTHE, OHIO-For the 12th time this season and his third win in six K-C tries, Sioux Falls, South Dakota driver Donnie Schatz throttled to victory at Jim Nier's K-C Raceway in the 40-lap Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws A-main. Former champ Keith Berner claimed the 25-lap late model main.
Great racing highlighted the entire evening as always with the notorious traveling group.
By virtue of winning the Crane Cams dash, Northern Ohio driver Chad Kemenah paced the WoO field to the green flag, only to have Donnie Schatz put on a slide job that wouldn't stick. Kemenah continued to lead the first three laps until Daryl Pittman brought out the race's first caution with a turn four spin.
Schatz tried Kemenah on the restart, but Kemenah rode the high side, reminiscent of his championship days. Just as Dale Blaney applied pressure on Schatz, Sam Hafertepe, Jr. brought out the caution with a spin in turn two. In a replay of the previous restart, Schatz dove low, but Kemenah's momentum once again carried him to the front.
Two laps later, Jimmy Stinson was collected up in a turn-four melee with Shane Stewart as the field took evasive action. A great battle developed between Jason Meyers and Terry McCarl, as Kemenah began to stretch it out for some breathing room. On lap 14 track owner/promoter Jimmy Nier snagged the turn three wall and flipped wildly several times before landing on his side. Moments later, Terry McCarl, commited to the top, piled in and hit the motionless car of Nier. Nier emerged only shaken, but his car was much worse for wear.
Schatz put on full battle armor for his dual with Kemenah; however, Kemenah repelled the South Dakota driver's challenges for several more laps. Dave Blaney made it a three-way race as the two-front runners engaged. On lap 24 Schatz finally made it stick as he blasted by Kemenah in turn three. A couple laps later, Blaney followed in suit and began to run down Schatz. Everyone kept an eye on Kraig Kinser as he charged from the tail to 11th.
Blaney closed in on Schatz between laps 25-30, but lapped traffic stifled his winning bid. The top ten were-Donny Schatz, Dale Blaney, Jason Meyers, Chad Kemenah, Joey Saldana, Kerry Madsen, Jac Haudenschild, Steve Kinser, Butch Schroeder, and Tim Shaffer
"In the early going I just had to by my time a little bit and figure out my car a little bit. I had to figure out how to make it stick," said Schatz in victory lane. "Once I figured out where I was fast things came to me. I was a little better on green flag runs, but accidents do happen. The car was fast all night long."
On the last lap after the checkered flag had waved Butch Schroeder tangled with King of the Outlaws Steve Kinser as both tumbled to a stop with Schroeder landing partially on top of Kinser.
The C-main Last Chance showdown was won by Adam Strausser followed by young Cale Conley who also transferred to the B-main. The Crane Cams Dash was won by Ohio charger and former K-C champ Chad Kemenah over Donnie Schatz. Delaware, Ohio driver Todd Kane earned a spot in the A-main with a B-main win over California's Paul McMahan, Rob Chaney and Tony Bruce, Jr. who all transferred to the feature.
Kraig Kinser was the hard charger in coming from 25th to 12th. Cale Conley won the Super Clean "Clean Start" Award.
Wheelersburg, Ohio driver Rod Conley took the initial lead in the 25-lap companion late model main, but his run was cut short when he lost a drive shaft on the second lap. Former champion Keith Berner inherited the point with Ben Adkins close-by in the catbird's seat.
With Berner jumping into a comfortable lead, the battle of the race was for second between Ben Adkins and Greg Oliver. The fierce assault would not dissolve as the pair rode within inches of each other to the halfway point. By now Adkins shook Oliver and closed the gap somewhat on Berner. On lap 14 Berner rode into lapped traffic, and slowed just enough that Adkins quickly closed the gap.
Then came a caution, setting the stage for what many thought would be an old fashioned shootout. It didn't materialize as Berner was lightning fast with clear sailing ahead of him. Jason Montgomery finally won a race-long scuffle with Mike Wilson for fifth.
"It's great to get this win tonight," said Berner in victory lane. "We kind of beat ourselves up all week, cause I felt we gave one away when I hit the wall last week. This sort of redeems us. And its the first one of won for my car owner and that's good for us and the team."
Behind second place Adkins, was Oliver, Delmas Conley, Jason Montgomery, Mike Wilson, Doug Dodd, Skip Watterman, John Whitney, Jeff Houser, and Larry Smith. Veteran Delmas Conley was the hard charger of the race.
K-C sits idle for the next two weeks, then reopens August 16 for the Sprint car season championship and Modified championships.
