Smith Smokes Sprints/Berwanger Befuddles AMRA Mods
Adams Attacks Hobbys
CHILLICOTHE, OHIO-After a torrid battle with young Sheldon Haudenschild, veteran sprint driver Danny Smith, Chillicothe, Ohio claimed the Goodyear 410 Sprint Car main at Jeff and Vicki Schrader’s K-C Raceway on a sultry Saturday night July 23. Jeremy Berwanger, the Murray City Bandit, blasted the AMRA modifieds after a race-long jousting match with Rob Stambaugh, and Jamie Adams, Laurelville, OH returned to victory lane in the Hobby Stock division.
Extreme temperatures and rains just about every place but the track set the action back nearly 45 minutes, but all the action was completed by 10:40. Additionally, nearly half of the sprint car field went home with a free Goodyear tire (the top nine cars) compliments of Jeff Schrader and the Goodyear Racing Program. Read More

Hot Rod Conley, Wheelersburg, Ohio bested the potent AMRA Late Model field, Brandon Mather broke Jamey Adams' win streak in the Hobby Stocks, and Todd Ervin won the first appearance of the Rear-wheel Drive Four Cylinders. Blaney takes ASCOC Speedweek $$$$
NASCAR Champ Stewart Charges from 24th to 7th
Berwanger and Adams take Support Features
By Brian Liskai/Scott Wolfe
CHILLICOTHE, OHO-Experiencing little mechanical issues over the past few O'Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champion events, George Fisher went to work on his Ti22 Performance sprint car. The result? A dominating performance by his driver Dale Blaney on the second night of the 29th Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek at KC Raceway.
Blaney led all 30 laps Saturday to take his 79th career All Star win as he continues to work toward his fourth All Star championship and a possible fifth Ohio Sprint Speedweek title. Jeremy Berwanger claimed the AMRA Advanced Services Modified main, while Jamey Adams won the Dan Reno Hobby Stock main. Highlights of the evening were the appearances of NASCAR Sprint Cup stars Kasey Kahne and Tony Stewart, who both raced their way into the A-main event.
"I love this place”, said Blaney. “George likes it...I mean it's kind of his home track. We always run pretty good here. The way the track was tonight you could race all over it," said Blaney. "We've been qualifying really well but we haven't been finishing off things. Tonight the car was really, really good from qualifying on and I tried to limit my mistakes to a few tonight. If we can continue to do that we will be in good shape."
"The traffic went pretty good for us. I tried to be aggressive because that 83 car (Tim Shaffer) is awful, awful fast, especially the last half of the race he gets really fast and you know he'll be there at the end. I was just trying to put as many lapped cars between us and it worked out pretty good," added Blaney.
Shaffer, who opened speedweek with a win on Friday, would race into second on lap nine, but caution flags and lapped cars would prevent him from getting to Blaney.
"It wasn't meant to be tonight. Dale and George and those guys did a great job. We couldn't get the breaks tonight. It's been a tough year already and hopefully during speedweek we can make up some ground," said Shaffer beside his Aaron Call/Janet Holbrook owned machine sponsored by Kistler Engines.
Cole Duncan would take third on the third lap and that's where he would finish, as the cautions prevented him from challenging the top two.
"We had motor trouble yesterday and Charlie Fisher helped us out today and we got that thing running pretty good. We were pretty good on the long runs...we were good early but there were too many lapped cars there at the end," said Duncan beside his Bobby Labonte Racing, Wolfden Carbon Fiber Products, Motorcity Auto Transport backed #22. "We put this car together last week...we crashed here last Saturday so we put a new car together and it seems to be pretty good."
Blaney and Kyle Sauder would lead the field to the green with David Gravel, Shaffer, Duncan and Cap Henry in tow. Duncan would move into third on lap three and immediately challenged Sauder for the runner-up spot as Blaney pulled away. "The Low Rider" would hit lapped traffic by lap 7 as Sauder continued to battle Duncan and now Shaffer. Shaffer would drive by both Duncan and Sauder into second on lap 9. Meanwhile there was a great battle for third between Sauder, Duncan, Henry, Gravel and Randy Hannagan.
The caution would fly on lap 13 for a Sheldon Haudenschild/Rob Chaney tangle on the back stretch. Blaney would have four lapped cars between himself and Shaffer who had a lapped machine separating him and Duncan. With a clear track, Blaney would pull away as Shaffer struggled with the lapped cars. Duncan, Sauder, Hannagan and Henry would continue to wage a tremendous battle for third that would last until lap 28 when Travis Philo flipped hard in turn three with fifth place running Cap Henry spinning to avoid the crash.
With a green-white-checkered to finish the race - coupled with a clear track - Blaney would power away to the win over Shaffer, Duncah, Hannagan and Gravel. While the race for third was a dandy, the fans were also treated to NASCAR star Tony Stewart charging from 24th - last - to a seventh place finish.
In the AMRA Advanced Services modified main, former AMRA national champion Jeremy Berwanger fended off the defending AMRA champ Kenny Johnson. Bob Crace, Jr. gave Berwanger a run early, but as the race progressed Berwanger began to check out.
Crace and Kenny Johnson sparred early, and then continued their attack in reverse order once Johnson edged by following a restart. Father-son team of Jeremy and Tim Rayburn battled Fireball Pinkerton and defending K-C champion Brian Whiteman. Racing was once again close and racy throughout the pack, as the sizzling modifieds set the stage for the ensuing ASCOC Speedweek feature.
After a spin Whiteman went to the rear and started a charge the left a great impression on the open wheel crowd. Whiteman came from 17th to 8th in the run. Only Kevin Delaney was able to close the door on his charge to the front.
As Johnson gave it his all to catch the “Murray City Bandit” Berwanger, Crace, Rayburn, Pinkerton, and another contender Chris Wilson fought for position. Crace slowed momentarily, shuffling the top five, allowing Pinkerton to bag Rayburn for third and fourth. Veteran Crace recovered for a strong fifth.
John Arthurs was the co-hard-charger of the race in a 16th to tenth place run, while newcomer Shawn Donahue had a great run in his first appearance at K-C blasting from the tail to 11th. K-C racing Icon Bud Frazier blitzed from 14th to 9th.
Defending Road Warrior champion Matt Holcomb suffered mechanical woes as did Late Model transplant Greggie Oliver. Mark Bailey had another good run going, but suffered a flat.
Rounding out the top ten were Berwanger, Johnson, Pinkerton, J. Rayburn, Crace, Jr., Wilson, Delaney, Whiteman, Frazier, and Arthurs.
Who says ‘nice guys finish last’? No matter where he starts, he puts on a show, and he wins against a whole group of talented, hard-charging Saturday night warriors. Yes, Jamey Adams did it again.
In the night’s finale--Dan Reno Hobby Stocks-- Brandon Mather grabbed the early lead and led 13 laps, despite climbing the front stretch wall on the second lap, then powering back down into turn one in resuming his charge. Mather at one point built up a ten-car length lead, but his tires appeared to fade as the race wore on.
Mather survived several cautions that eliminated several contenders including Roger Mossbarger, Tim Cutler, Keith Dubois, Mike Brust, Jack Martin and Gary Park. On each restart former champion Tommy Mossbarger and Richard Trego challenged for second as another former Champ Bruce Gray, Jr. and Jamey Adams battled for the next position.
As Trego’s mount lost traction, Gray leap-frogged into a fight for second with Mossbarger. Adams, Trego, Jim Hildebrand and Brandon Thompson dove into the fray, as cars scrambled two, sometimes three-wide for position. Great racing back in the pack pleased the remaining throng of spectators who stayed to watch the talented K-C Hobby Stockers.
Defending multi-time champion Jamey Adams started picking them off one at a time as everyone else dueled for position. When all was said and done, it was Adams, Mather, Gray, Jr., Mossbarger, Hildebrand, Trego, Thompson, Butch Eblin, Tracey Ross, and Roger Mossbarger. Butch Eblin was hard charger of the race in a 13th to eighth run.
“Again I’d like to thank everyone who helps me—sponsors, family, and friends. Without them it wouldn’t be possible and to win in front of the speedweek crowd is nice.”
K-C Hosts Carload Night Saturday, June 25 when admission is free, but each carload of fans enters the parking lot for just $10. That's right! Just $10 per carload all night long.
Also coming to K-C July 1 in a rare Friday night appearance is the historical "Night the Stars Come Out!" featuring the O'Reilly All-Star Sprint cars and All-Star Late Models, plus Hobby Stocks all on the same racing card.

"LIL HAUD" Takes K-C 410 Sprint Cash
Pinkerton and Adams claim AMRA Mods and Dan Reno Hobbys
K-C Raceway Results 6-11-11
By Scott Wolfe
CHILLICOTHE, OHIO-A great field of cars and a packed house set the back drop for a drama-filled evening of racing that saw second generation driver Sheldon Haudenschild, Millersburg, OH claim the Goodyear 410 sprint car win over a field of 32 of the regions finest sprint drivers during Fan Appreciation Night at Schrader's K-C Raceway, Saturday night. Dave "Fireball" Pinkerton, Chillicothe claimed his second win of the year in the Advanced Services AMRA Modified main after a race-long battle with Hall of Famer Bob Crace, Jr.; and talented Jamey Adams, Laurelville, OH claimed the Dan Reno Hobby stock bout in a close run over Bruce Gray, Jr. Fan Appreciation Night was sponsored by the Pike County Commissioners.
Thirty-two sprint cars poured through the gates in a quest to get the winner's share of the purse, plus a brand new Goodyear tire from Kear's Speed Shop for anyone finishing in the top ten. Despite heavy rains Friday night and Saturday morning that dumped nearly two inches of moisture on the track; the 3/8 mile oval was again extremely fast.
Circa 1976 a youngster by the name of Jac Haudenschild drove the Yerian Coal Co. #75 to his first (then Atomic Speedway) K-C Raceway win. Some 36 years later, another teenager, 16-year old Sheldon Haudenschild, blitzed his way to his first K-C victory lane via the highside--the trademark rim-ride his famous father made famous in a storied Hall of Fame career.
A first lap crash in turn 3 blocked the track and collected six heavy-hitters ( Aaron Higgins, Nick Naber, Kyle Sauder, Jimmy Stinson, Danny Smith, fast timer Cole Duncan), altering the script to the tune of an equally prolific drama.
Lil Haud battled early leader Jimmy Nier as the duo literally romped the high banks as if on a rail. On lap five Haudenschild's #93 dove low by Nier, but Nier battled back to lead two more circuits. Haudenschild made a high-side pass stick and left Nier to pursue closely for the next ten circuits.
Wayne McPeek, "TheWest Virginia Warrior" and Mitchell Harble battled up through the pack after transferring from the B-main to top ten runs. Much of the race Kory Crabtree and Ron Blair swapped positions, while Josh Davis, Zach Ames, Chris Myers, and Mark Imler jostled for position in sometimes 3-wide action. For a time Crabtree was within striking distance of Nier, but once Blair came into the mix, Nier pulled away.
Haudenschild started to inch away and was slowed only once in lapped traffic. A lap 15 restart gave the front runners open sailing, but the youngster soon stretched it out to a comfortable lead and on to the win.
Said Haudenschild, "I'd like to dedicate this win to my Grandpa. I really had fun out their tonight and it's neat to have Dad here to see me win. I just wish he'd had the chance to race me in the feature; but we'll try that again next week."
Rounding out the top ten were Haudenschild, Nier, Ron Blair, Kory Crabtree, Mitchel Harble, Josh Davis, Wayne McPeek, Zach Ames, Chris Myers, and Mark Imler.
Flip victims included Kyle Sauder, Danny Smith, Jordan Harble, and Dallas Hewitt. Jac Haudenschild suffered engine problems while leading his heat race and was finished for the evening.
In the Advanced Services AMRA Modified main, Bob Crace, Jr. and Dave "Fireball" Pinkerton, two Chillicothe natives put on the show of a lifetime much to the delight of the large crowd. Crace led the first four markers and survived several restarts before Pinkerton powered by to take the lead.
From that point on Crace threw everything he had at Pinkerton. Every time Crace challenged, the crowd cheered, some in hopes that Crace could make the pass, and some cheering that Pinkerton wouldn't fold. While that duo battled up front, Mark Bailey had the run of his career in holding off defending champion and car-builder Brian Whiteman. Bailey took the low-to-middle line and Whiteman the high-side, often running on the edge and nearing disaster. Early contenders Jeremy Berwanger and Danny Ferguson exited early after a turn two accident. Jeremy Rayburn also had a good run going, but suffered a flat tire, ending his hopes of a top five finish.
One of the up-and-coming top guns putting on a show was Phillip Bapst, who earned hard-charger honors in a torrid run from 14th to fifth. Standing hard on the throttle, Bapst picked up a position nearly every lap, but was nearly stonewalled toward the finish by hot shoes C.J. Ferguson and Jimmy Lennex, Jr. Once Bapst was by, Ferguson and Lennox fought it out and were left to hold off the challenges of John Arthurs and Jamie Lawson. Sean Settles also came on strong at the finish.
Much of the crowd was on its feet with three laps to go when Crace pulled alongside Pinkerton. "I heard him back there, then I saw him. I think I got a little nervous the last few laps, but had to concentrate to stay smooth."
Crace made a last lap bid, but Pinkerton won by a car length to gain his second victory of the season. "Bob raced me clean and I raced him clean. He's a good friend and great driver. I felt him pressuring me, and knew if I bobbled he'd be right there. I would like to thank all the fans for coming out and supporting the racing and also add that our K-C modified drivers all do a great job. They race hard and they race clean. I'm fortunate to win."
Rounding out the top ten were Pinkerton, Crace, Jr., Bailey, Whiteman, hard-charger Phillip Bapst, C.J. Ferguson, Jimmy Lennox, John Arthurs, Jamie Lawson, who recovered from a spin to reach a top ten; and Sean Settles. Pinkerton claimed the $50 Grooms Trucking Fast Time Award.
Like the close modified show, the Dan Reno Hobby Stocks were racey and showed much professionalism. Most of all, multi-time champion Jamey Adams engaged in a race-long battle with Bruce Gray, Jr. The two pulled away from the rest of the pack with Gray knocking on the door every step of the way. Brandon Mather won his heat and was poised for a good feature run, but suffered mechanical woes as did Jason Holstein.
Tommy Mossbarger pressured Gray early, but had to concentrate on holding off a blitzing Jim Hildebrand and Tracey Ross. Ross the Rim-rider kept up his momentum the entire feature run to bring home a top five. Roger Mossbarger came on strong late in the race pulling Keith Dubois and Tim Cutler in tow. Butch Eblin continues his strong season with a top ten finish over race hard-charger Jeff Sheets (14th to 10th).
Last week, Adams accepted and won the "Last to First" challenge, but opted for the more traditional route to victory lane this week. Still, Adams had his hands full. The last three laps Gray drove deep into the turns, forcing Adams to show his hand. When all was said and done, Adams doubled-down for the win with Gray a close second. Jim Hildebrand tried Mossbarger on the last lap, but Mossbarger, another K-C Champion held on for third. Both drivers had clean, hard runs into the top five.
Rounding out the top ten were Jamey Adams, Bruce Gray, Jr., Tommy Mossbarger, Jim Hildebrand, Tracey Ross, Roger Mossbarger, Keith Dubois, Tim Cutler, Butch Eblin, and Jeff Sheets.

Smith, Chamberlain, Pinkerton, Adams Post K-C Raceway Veterans Appreciation Wins!
Trego Eclipses Track Record at 16:283
Reno Memorial Race Draws Big Turnout
K-C Raceway Results FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 5-28-2011
By Scott Wolfe
CHILLICOTHE, OHIO-Sunny skies, a large crowd, and 111 of the best cars in the Midwest filed into K-C Raceway Saturday night to help honor those who served in the military as part of the Veteran's Appreciation Night. Sprint car victor Danny Smith, of Chillicothe, said it best in victory lane, "Special thanks to the Veterans who are here tonight. Without them, this (racing) wouldn't be possible." Joining Smith in victory lane was Richmond, Indiana's Duane Chamberlain (Late Models) and local fan favorite Dave "Fireball" Pinkerton. Earning a hard-fought win in the Dan Reno Memorial Hobby Stock feature was defending champion Jamie Adams of Laurelville.
So many cars and fans rushed the K-C parking lot that racing had to be delayed at least 20 minutes to allow entry into the pit area. "That's a good thing," smiled owner Jeff Schrader. "It is one of those problems you like to have. First, I would like to thank all Veterans for coming out tonight, and thank all the many fans and drivers who chose to race at K-C Raceway. I appreciate you all very much."
Two unplanned highlights of the night were having Hall of Famer Charlie Swartz charge from 8th to a 4th place transfer spot in his heat. This was only the second time he has been in a race car in the past ten years; subbing for son Audie who was helping a customer sort out a car in Missouri. The other highlight of the unfortunate nature was a wicked end-for-end hot lap flip by Wes McGlumphy. The driver was ok but his car very badly damaged.
In the Goodyear 410 Sprint Car main, outside pole sitter Todd Kane took the early lead over Danny Smith. Action slowed early when Josh Moffett in the Charlie Brown Special spun in turn two. When lap five rolled around Danny Smith was able to put a slide job on Kane for the lead, but Kane came back at the new leader for a lead swap that didn't stick.
Veteran John Shewbrooks clipped a spinning Moffett on lap six, nearly flipping to bring out the second caution. From that point on the race went green. Smith built up a pad, while Kane and Nier battled hard for second. Kane began a slow fade as the race progressed as Jimmy Stinson passed both Kane and Nier for second. Cole Duncan and Aaron Higgins, two K-C young guns battled nip-and-tuck for 4th as Stinson and Nier closed the gap on Smith, who had to get up on the wheel in heavy lapped traffic.
Josh Davis worked on Kane in an effort to break into a top five after race-long battles with hard chargers Zach Ames, Nathan Skaggs, and hot-footed lady driver Brandy Bower.
Although Stinson, Nier, and Higgins--a trio of Billy Jarrell cars--ate up huge chunks of valuable turf, Smith was able to pull of his second K-C win of the year. Rounding out the top ten were Smith, Stinson, Nier, Higgins, Duncan, Kane, Davis, Ames, Skaggs, and Brandy Bower. Nier was the hard charger of the race in picking four positions.
Said Smith in victory lane, "The car was pretty darn fast. The guys did a good job on the set-up, and the track was once again fast. You could run anywhere on it."
Smith then thanked our veterans and announced, "Shirley Kear has helped me out a bunch. Tonight I am making this Shirley Kear night at K-C Raceway. Also, thanks to everyone who helped get me here and for the fans who come out and support their local track."
Much drama centered around the Dan Reno Memorial Feature, a race run in honor of a great driver and man, Mr. Dan Reno. Brother Darrell Reno paced the field in Dan's #22 as a memoriam to K-C's fallen hero. Ironically, the race paid $1022 to win for driver Jamie Adams and $122 to start. The #22 all the way through the payout was a symbol of Reno's car number.
In the feature event it took three restarts to get the race underway, but when the pack was turned loose Jamie Adams and Bruce Gray, Jr. unleashed a dog-fight. Adams barked the loudest in the early going, but Gray was always within a few car lengths. As the track laid some rubber, the top three moved with feet of each other in a wild fight from number one.
Joining the pack was Kentucky driver Colby Taylor in his first visit to the K-C high-banks. Taylor pressed Gray for second, finally making the pass on lap 11. The trio continued two-wide until Taylor and Adams stretched it out for a fierce five-lap shoot out. Taylor edged by several times and tried Adams, side by side, through three and four coming to the checkered.
Taylor waivered just a little as he spun to the finish line with Gray picking up second. The Dan Reno Memorial Feature top ten: Jamie Adams, Bruce Gray, Jr., Colby Taylor, Brandon Mather, Brandon Thompson, Adam Jordan, Tim Cutler, Phil Rice, Travis Pertuset, and Roger Mossbarger. The Hobby Stock hard charger was Adam Jordan, who came from 15th to 6th.
Adams said in victory lane, "I've never raced against that boy before, but he is a helluva good racer. We raced hard and I don't think either of us have a mark on the car."
"We did a lot of changing on the car tonight, but I think we made the right call. We have a lot of good drivers in this division and they are all getting faster. Once again thanks to everyone who helps me with the car. This win is for you."
Insane Duane Chamberlain had won just about everywhere he has raced. Saturday night, he added historic K-C Raceway to the long list. Soft spoken and polite off the track, Chamberlain is a "terror" on the track. Saturday was no exception.
Hall of Famer Delmas Conley and Racin' Jason Montgomery brought the field to the green flag for the super fast AMRA Late Model A-main. Conley got the jump with Montgomery close in tow. The field got strung out early, but by lap six things started to heat up for the point. Chamberlain moved into second, while Josh McGuire reeled in Montgomery in a fight for third.
Chamberlain pressured Conley low in a side-by-side dual, while McGuire pulled under Montgomery. Exiting turn four of the ninth lap the four cars raced double-file, nose to tail. Something had to give as the close-quarters made for some anxious, high-speed moments. McGuire drifted high and the contact cocked his mount side ways as he and Montgomery came to a grinding halt on the front chute wall. This was the second early exit for Montgomery while running either second or third over the past two weeks.
When the race resumed Conley grabbed the lead, but Chamberlain's Patrick Sheltra Racing #23/Rocket Chassis made a Kamakazee dive and made it stick for the lead. Meanwhile, Rod Conley again came on late in the race, picking off several cars for a top three. A lot of impressive work was displayed by the top-ten drivers, who diced two-wide for much of the event. The Late Model hard charger was Billy Gullion who was the most impressive of the group in a 16th to 6th run.
Rounding out the top ten were Duane Chamberlain, Delmas Conley, Rod Conley, Mark Frazier, Nick Bocook, Billy Gullion, Ralph Withem, Jeff Houser, Josh Tidwell, and Dylan Huron.
Said victor Chamberlain, "Finally! I thank you all. This has been a couple years in coming. I love this track, but I've had bad luck and I have finished second too many times. I'm glad to finally get it done here at K-C."
Win or lose, Dave "Fireball" Pinkerton is always exciting. After bad luck last week, Pinkerton turned the tables for a more favorable conclusion.
Pinkerton outran a host of defenders, but had his hands full of Brian Whiteman and Jeremy Berwanger most of the race. About midway, Pinkerton stretched out his lead in his "Powered by HORIZON #8 Dirt Modified", but in the closing laps he was up on the chip as Berwanger and Whiteman closed the gap.
Dave McWilliams, Miles Cook, Jeremy Rayburn, and Shaun Scott all had great runs toward a top five, but it was Cook who had it high against the wall to win the Hard Charger award. Cook advanced from 16th to 5th in a tremendous run after experiencing bad luck in his heat race.
Pinkerton was smooth over the last couple laps to hold off Berwanger, who had jumped ahead of Whiteman. Rounding out the top ten were Pinkerton, Berwanger, Whiteman, McWilliams, Cook, Jeremy Rayburn, Shaun Scott, Kevin Delany, Greg Anderson, and Mark Bailey.
Pinkerton said, "It's been a while. We were out there just having fun. Thanks to all the fans who came out tonight. I hope we put on a great race. Jeremy and Brian ran me clean and hard most of the race. Hats off to them, and thanks to everyone who made this win possible."

Conley, Stotts, Adams Grab K-C Raceway wins
Adkins Eclipses Track Record at 13:377
May 21, 2011 K-C Raceway Results
CHILLICOTHE, OHIO-Defending Champions Delmas Conley of Wheelersburg, OH(Late Models) and Jamie Adams of Laurelville, OH(Hobby Stocks) joined Advanced Services AMRA Modified invader Chris Stotts in K-C Raceway’s victory lane during Hall of Fame Night at the historic Ohio oval Saturday night. Great racing and some unfortunate high-speed accidents highlighted the evening.
Prior to the racing festivities K-C Raceway Hall of Fame inductees were honored. The 2011 class includes the versatile Bobby Morgan, sprint ace George Harbour, the multitalented father-son team of Bob Crace, Sr. and Bob Crace, Jr.; Stock Car ace George Branscom, notable car owner Bob Lemaster, and extraordinary photographer Stan Jeffrey. (A script and biography of each inductee follows this release below)
Sometimes you just have to be good or have a little luck. Veteran National LM Hall of Famer Delmas Conley was both Saturday night as he wheeled into victory lane for the 541st time.
"Most of the night I thought I had a third place car then Ben(Adkins) and Jason (Montgomery) dropped out, and there I was in the lead," said Conley. "I might have made a good race out of it anyway, who knows (grinned Conley). The car was pretty darn good." The Dayton Auto Racing Fan Club, DARF, and Hoot Gibson--representing the club--presented a free DARF membership and T-Shirt to all winners.
Cloudy skies and a tacky track made for some fantastic high-speed racing. Just how fast was K-C Raceway Saturday? Fast timer Ben Adkins, West Portsmouth, OH eclipsed Jackie Boggs’ nine-year old track record of 13:614 with a blistering 13:377 run. Adkins was working on a clean sweep after claiming the first heat win over charging Mike Wilson.
Adkins and first heat winner Jason Montgomery began to walk away from the rest of the pack with Audie Swartz a solid third. Adkins and Montgomery then got caught up in a 7-car melee that eliminated four cars including the two top runners.
Swartz inherited the lead, but a lap later Conley leaned on Swartz in turn won to craftily take the lead. Mike Wilson followed in suit to take second. Shannon Roese was well on his way to hard-charger honors when he went pit side with cooling problems. At the same time, racing Chiropractor Brian Eaton tumbled hard into the third turn wall and was out for the night.
As Wilson closed the gap on Conley, Rod Conley, Mark Frazier, Rod Evans, Tony Roush, KY’s Paul Davis and hard charger Randy Wynett (18th to 9th) battled hard for a top five.
When all was said and done, Conley in the Conley Trucking #71 held off Mike Wilson for the win. Rounding out the top ten were Swartz, Conley, Frazier, Evans, Roush, Davis, Wynett, and Russ Frohnapfel.
In the modified main veteran Tim Rayburn and Chris Stotts paced the field to Daryl Owens’ green flag. It took three restarts to get underway, including a violent end-over-end, wall-grinding flip by Eric Arledge. Arledge was shaken, but his car was destroyed in the bone-shaking tumble.
Rayburn led the single-file parade until Stotts dove low for the pass. Rayburn sustained the lead through lap six when an unfortunate spin collected son Jeremy, sending both to the tail. Stotts never looked back despite a late charge by second place Jeremy Berwanger. Much of the race following Rayburn’s demise, Rob Stambaugh and Jeremy Berwanger fought it out with Bob Crace, Jr. and Todd Robinson for position.
Stotts’ Swartz Extreme Chassis/Carthage Auto Parts/Stoneridge Apts. car in its debut run pulled off the popular win ahead of Berwanger, Stambaugh, Robinson, Shawn Holiday, Jeremy Rayburn up from the tail to sixth in a great run, Lonnie Kidd, hard-charger Kevin Delaney (19th to 8th), Tim Rayburn (also up from the tail to a top ten), and T.J. Harper.
Said Stotts, “For the first time out, this car started 'gettin good’. I have to give a big thanks to the crew and Dave Norton for all of their hard work and to Audie (Swartz) for all the extra time he puts in on this car. We hope to just pick and choose our races again this year, but it is good to get the win tonight."
The Dan Reno hobby stock main was a barn-burner between defending champion and master-car builder Jamie Adams and former champion Bruce Gray, Jr. Jim Hildebrand was within striking distance much of the race, lying in wait for a mistake from either Adams or Gray.
With two laps to go, the caution waved and Adams started to get a flat, but the tire held enough to get the job done for the win (as the tire deflated in victory lane).
"Wow, I knew I had the flat with three laps to go, but said, I'm going for it. Bruce showed me his line early and I knew where he was at and where I need to be. He gave me a good run and is a heck of a driver. He will be here in victory lane soon. I'd like to thank all of my sponsors, my family, and friends. They make this all possible."
The hard-charging top ten were Adams, Gray, Hildebrand, Jeremy Bretz, Tim Cutler, Mike Brust, Tommy Mossbarger—the race hard-charger up from 18th to 7th in a whirlwind run; Patrick Parks, Steve Karr, and Roger Mossbarger.
